We are an Active Flag School

The Active Flag is a Department of Education and Skills initiative that recognises schools that “strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community”.

See website www.activeschoolflag.ie for details. Our pupils, staff and parents are committed to making activity and exercise a fun and everyday way of life in our school.

We are working hard to get our first active flag and enjoying many new and exciting initiatives during the school day to help keep us healthy and active. This includes activities such as “Wake up-shake up” and “Drop everything and run breaks”

Physical Education programme
Our students participate in a minimum of one hour timetabled Physical Education per week. Pupils take part in lessons that cover the strands of the Physical Education Curriculum - Athletics, Dance, Games, Gymnastics, Aquatics and Outdoor and Adventure activities. Our Curricular focus in P.E. for this year is Dance.

Theresa O’ Donoghue from Scoil Rinne Carney came to teach Irish dancing at the start of term. The students learned lots of new steps and enjoyed Theresa’s weekly visits.

Physical Activity Initiatives
In addition to PE lessons pupils take part in many fun activities to stay active throughout the school day. Our teachers and students regularly drop everything and get moving with Go Noodle and You Tube movement breaks.

Regular brain breaks boost energy levels fuelling children’s brains for further learning and these breaks are particularly important on rainy days when we can’t go outside.
We have introduced many initiatives to promote activity throughout the day and current school year.

These include, Active Breaks every day, a Run a Day, organised playground games, using the playground markings and using our new active walkway.

Teachers also use physical activities throughout the curriculum. For example Maths trails, pair work walk and talk and Aistear (the early childhood curriculum framework).

Active School Week
We  are very busy planning our Active School Week this year, it will be held during the last week of April 2022 .This will be a yearly feature in our school calendar as we are committed to making activity a regular part of school life. We will have lots of different activities during Active week and hope to welcome local sports coaches.

Active Flag slogan
The children have came up with some fantastic slogans to remind us all to stay active. The active schools committee have chosen the slogan “GET FIT-DON’T QUIT!”
